Chapter Three: The Burial, Tsunade's Decision!

As the Leaf ninja walked back into the village, tey bore sasuke's body on a stretcher with reverence. No one spoke, and no one stopped them. People began to gather in the streets. They made it to the Hokage's mansion, and walked up the steps. Many of Naruto's friends went to go prepare for the funeral.

Team Kakashi was last. Yamato and Sai both stopped at the door and waited outside. Kakashi, Sakura, and Naruto entered, Sakura still looking teary eyed. Tsunade looked up from her desk, and gaped at the bdoy the three of them were carrying. She looked down.

"So, it finally happened. Who was it?"

"Akatsuki, and Itachi." said Sakura, her lip trembling. Naruto began to grind his teeth.

"Grandma Tsunade, we need to go after them. Let me go, I can handle it!" Naruto was practically yelling at her, but she said nothing. Kakashi laid his hand on his student's shoulder.

"Actually, it may not have been him. Though Itachi walked away from the fight, there were no physical marks on Sasuke's body, and there was a third, charred, unidentified body on the ground. It could be that Sasuke met another opponent, and died in a fight with that opponent while Itachi fled.

Also, there were signs of four other people, and judging from the footprints, I'd say that they engaged Sasuke's group, and entered the hideout after the fight had ended. That may have been where they found Itachi, and fought him, but I don't think so. Only two of the four entered, while the others kept watch, so I'm willing to bet that of the ones that entered, at least one was an ally of Itachi, and knew exactly what was going on.

Of course, that's asuming a lot, but there's one more thing. Based on all that, I'd say that the charred body was Uchiha Madara." Tsunade gasped, and looked up at Kakashi.

"But, wasn't he supposed to have died a long time ago?"

"Well, no one really knows what happened at the Valley of the End, so it could be that Madara escaped with his life." Kakashi shrugged.

"I see. That was what Jiraiya suspected, too." Naruto perked up at the name of his other teacher.

"Yeah, Grandma, where is pervy sage anyway?" he asked. Tsunade looked at the floor.

"He requested that I send him on a mission to gather intelligence on the Akatsuki. He should be back soon. He's not going to pass the border of the Land of Fire, or so he said. Anyway, this is all very unfortunate, but we cannot allow you all to chase after the Akatsuki. If they can kill Sasuke, they can kill you, Naruto.

I'm going to send the two of you on a more relaxing mission. I know it's hard, but this is no longer your affair. I'll be sending multiple squads of high level jonin ninja to find and questiuon Itachi, and Kakashi will lead this mission. And Jiraiya, when he gets back.

Besides, Sasuke went after Itachi in the name of revenge. If you do the same thing, what will happen to you?"

Naruto scowled, and stomped out of the room. Sakura turned back to the Hokage, "So, what's the name of this mission?"

Tsunade smiled, but waved her off. "Go. We all have a funeral to attend, and you should go and get changed. She turned to Kakashi, "We'll go over the finer points of your mission later, but right now we'd best get ready."

_______________________________

"So, Itachi ditched us, huh? And Madara's dead, that's even worse."

"Yes, but don't forget, with Madara gone, we're free to run Akatsuki as we see fit."

"Perhaps, Konan, but Itachi was our greatest asset. What we'll do with him as our enemy, I don't know."

Nagato and Konan were standing in the highest tower of the Rain village, while the rain itself beat heavily upon the building. Konan knew what was coming, but she had very little time to voice her complaints.

"You remember, Nagato, that Itachi was almost on level with both Madara and you. If you fight him, you could die." She looked at Nagato, studying him carefully. And she was shocked to see him break into a smile.

"Exactly. So, we defeat our other adversaries first. The Hidden Lightning was already devastated, they are no longer a threat. We have persuaded our allies in the Hidden Rock and Hidden Mist to stand by for our signal."

"Are you sure you can control the Hidden Mist even with Madara gone?" Konan’s voice was full of worry.

"Yes, we have reached a mutual agreement; They shall stand with us as long as the Hidden Rock does." Of course, Pain had conquered the Hidden Rock a few years after the Hidden Grass and Hidden Rain, so it was one of his principle territories.

"So then, all we have to do is wait for the Hidden Sound to get out of our way?"

"Yes. Kabuto is such a nuisance, but once he's gone, we can conquer the Sand, Waterfall, and Leaf Villages."

Sasuke's funeral was, Naruto reflected, the worst day of his life.

He and Sakura just kneeled in front of the coffin, and she cried on his shoulder. he held his tears back as long as he could, and then began to cry with the others.

Team Guy had returned hours before, and Neji held Tenten while her eyes watered. Guy and Kurenai had gone to comfort Kakashi, who was at the Stone of fallen heroes’, on which Sasuke's name had been etched. "Not the first of the Uchiha to be on that stone," Kakashi thought, "And not the last either."

Lee was on his knees, shaking with sobs. Ino was being comforted by Choji, who seemed to be taking this the best of all of them. Shikamaru was impassionate as ever, but his heart went out to Naruto and Sakura.

Kiba was fighting back his tears, and swallowing occasionally. Hinata stood beside Naruto, knowing he needed strength. Shino looked fine, but a single tear sliding down his cheek betrayed his emotions. Sai blinking often, not sure how to act, but he knew he finally felt what Naruto had told him about. He saw the bond between Sasuke and Naruto, similar to the bond between Naruto and himself.

But most important of all, Sai had found something. He had discovered his own emotions, blessed with the touch of Sasuke's heart.

_________________________________

Not long after the funeral, Sasuke's body was buried, and Naruto visited with Tsunade. She looked older, more tired than he remembered her. But his emotions were stone cold, and he shut them out for the moment.

"So, Naruto. I'm sending you with the rest of team Kakashi, minus Kakashi, along with Teams Kurenai, Guy, and Asuma on a mission to Sunagakure. It's a political mission, so you may not enjoy it too much, but you'll be located at a beach, so try to have some fun, ok?"

"Yeah, ok." Naruto sighed, and headed from the Hokage's office, know that this burden would rest heavily on his shoulders during the following trip.

Chapter Four: Sunagakure Beach, We Redeem Our Love!

Kankuro dragged his feet through the sand. He had gotten impatient waiting for their guests, so he decided to go on a walk. Of all the beaches in the Wind Country, this one was by far the most peaceful, and the most beautiful. The crimson sunsets (which they wouldn't see for a few more hours), the high palm trees, the foaming waves; it was a culmination of everything that the word "nature" stood for.

Not that it wasn't full of people, but most of them were off on the sides, making sure to stay clear of Temari. She stood menacingly above their younger brother, who was stretched out on the sand, in his full Kazekage uniform.

Kankuro chuckled to himself. Their little brother was so famous, and so adored by all of the girls at the beach, so he couldn't blame Temari for being a little defensive of her little brother.

He wondered why the Hokage had requested this outing so suddenly. All Gaara had said was "to ease the tension", but what did that mean? What was so different, what tension needed to be put at ease? Did this have something to do with Sasuke?

Just then, another group of people arrived, towards the back of the beach. They looked lost, but Guy pointed them towards the umbrella under which the Kazekage was relaxing.

Naruto and his friends approached the ring of people that surrounded Gaara and his older sister. They pushed their way through, and walked forward. Gaara got up, and shook Naruto's hand. "It's been a while, Naruto." He looked at all of his friends. "You're all decked out in your own swimsuits, too."

"Well, you know, it's no big deal." Naruto commented, taking a step back, and bumping casually into Hinata. "Oops sorry Ms. -- I mean Hinata!" Hinata blushed even deeper, and turned away. Sai lifted an eyebrow at the pair of them, and then turned back to Gaara.

"As Naruto was about to say, it was no trouble at all, lord Kazekage."

"That's because you only wear half of a shirt anyway." whispered Sakura.

"Hey, that's not fair, billboard-brow! It's just his style!"

"That's what you think Ino-pig, but you wear a belly shirt too! The two of you are like twins or something!"

"Aren't we?" Ino smiled, rubbing Sai's chest affectionately. "C'mon," she pulled on Sai's arm, "Let's work on your tan!"

Kiba watched them go, and turned to Akamaru. "You wanna go explorin', boy?" Akamaru woofed, most likely meaning yes, and the two of them took off as well.

Shino sat down under the umbrella, and Kankuro decided to join him. He knew the Aburame clan was big on silence, and he was already tired, what with the work it took to haul all of their drinks and things down here. Sitting next to someone quiet might be nice for a change, especially when your sister was Temari.

Neji also sat down next to Gaara, and the two of them began to talk politics, while being tugged away by Lee. Mostly it was stuff regarding the treaty between Konohagakure and Sunagakure, which at this point didn't need revision. Kankuro thought the he was just trying to kill time.

Shikamaru and Choji set up another few umbrellas, laid out under them, completely shaded. As usual, the latter had a few snacks on him, and that was all the two of them needed. Kurenai made for the Ice Cream stand.

Naruto opened a Coke, and tossed a couple more to Guy's team, Sakura, and Hinata. "Anybody wanna play a game of volleyball?" he asked.

"Yes, and we will be the ones to win!"

"Now Lee, there are some things more important than winning. Sometimes you have to lose in order to win, let your opponent think that he's won, but in reality you win because of his over-confidence!"

"I see, sir, that's genius!" shouted Lee, while Sakura thought, "Does that really apply to volleyball?"

The teams were set up; it was a two-on-two game of Sakura and Lee versus Guy and Tenten. Neji sat and refereed to match, but Naruto just figured he was glad not to have to play with or against Lee or Guy.

"Hey, uh, Naruto, there's something I'd like to show you something." Naruto whipped around, to see Hinata, who blushed yet again.

"Uh, sure, why not? What is it?" Naruto replied blandly, but Hinata looked excited.

"It's a surprise!" Hinata blushed an even deeper shade of red as Naruto frowned at her.

"Ok, well, where is it then?"

"Over this way!" said Hinata, pulling him by his hand.

Naruto followed her closely, up and around a hill and through some tall grass, to a spot at the edge of a small cliff. It was directly above the beach, but not visible to the naked eye. Naruto definatly thought that the beach was more beautiful from up here. “So, Hinata, what was it that you wanted to show me?”

“This.” She said. Naruto turned around, and found himself in her arms. Their lips met, and she became the only thing in the world worth caring about.

"So, Shino, enlighten me. Why exactly did the Hokage request this, er, 'mission' anyway?" Kankuro pried, trying to get out any information he could.

Shino turned towards him. "Undoubtedly because of Sasuke Uchiha's death." No sooner had the words left his mouth than Gaara straitened up, grabbed Shino by his collar, and raised him so they were eye to eye.

"What did you say?"

"Sasuke Uchiha was discovered dead, at the Uchiha hideout. We have very little evidence as to who killed him, but we suspect it was Akatsuki. I'm surprised the Hokage did not tell you." Gaara scowled. Shino continued to speak, "It's been hard on all of us. Not being a member of our village, you might not know, but Sasuke uchiha was considered the most skilled ninja in his year. All of us are feeling the pang of his death, and trying to push it away. Even I, with my emotions hidden, am deeply sorry. Especially for Naruto."

Gaara continued to scowl, and let go of Shino. He sat down of the sand, and looked at the setting sun. "One of you could have told me."

"I am sure none of the rest of us wanted to bring it up for obvious reasons."

Gaara nodded. "Where is Naruto?"

"That I do not know."

Gaara raised an eyebrow. He looked over at the volleyball game, now on round 23 (Guy was keeping count). "Hey, Neji."

Neji opened his left eye, and looked at the Kazekage. "Yes?"

"Where is Naruto?"

Neji sighed, and stood up. Opening his other eye, he muttered; "Byakugan!"

Gaara watched Neji's face intently, and saw his mind pass through his immense field of vision. "Got him."

Gaara sighed again, and stood up. "I'm going to go talk to him."

"Wait. There's some... one... else..." Neji trailed off as his face hardened. He stood up, and turned toward the small cleft where Naruto and Hinata were hidden.

They broke apart, staring at one another. Naruto, to Hinata's surprise, blushed, then turned away. She took one step forward, then another. Finally, she laid her hand on his shoulder. He turned back, and then looked into her milky white eyes. He shook his head.

"Hinata, this is all perfect, but....... with Sasuke gone... I just don't think I can." He looked down at his feet.

Hinata was wondering what to do next, when she found a burst of courage. With one finger, she tilted back his head, then brought her face an inch from his.

"You don't have to think, Naruto-kun. I can do the thinking for both of us."

Naruto smiled. "That's romantic and all, Hinata, but I just don't know..." he broke off again, as Hinata clasped his hands in hers.

"Please, Naruto." There was a desperate plea in her voice that Naruto knew all too well; this was how Sakura sounded when he went to go save Sasuke the first time.

"Please, I'm begging you. Let me express my feelings that I've held in for so long."

Naruto sighed, but he smiled, and they kissed yet again.

Neji, Gaara, and Sakura were standing just outside of the clearing. Neji was grinding his teeth, Gaara looked vaguely amused, and Sakura was smiling. Not from the effort that it was taking them to hold back Neji, he was very close to bursting in on the couple, but because Hinata and Naruto were finally together.

He's been oblivious to her for so long, it's about time. Haruno thought. Then her thoughts turn to Sasuke, and she let go of Neji. With only Gaara top restrain him, it was easy for him to burst in on the couple, who were mid-kiss. They burst apart. Neji walked strait up to Naruto.

"What the hell Uzumaki?! We come here for relaxation, and I find you with her? What's wrong with you anyway?"

Naruto looked at Gaara for support, but the Kazekage simply frowned, and turned to look at Sakura. Only the Kunoichi wasn't there. She must have gone back down the hill, Gaara thought.

Hinata looked afraid again; the prospect of her cousin intervening in her affair with Naruto mean that it would be revealed to her father, who, of course, would forbid such an interaction on principle.

Naruto began to step forward, but neji pushed him down.

"And I thought we were friends!"

"We are!"

"What am I, blind? I saw what just happened!"

"Neji enough." This time it was not Naruto, Hinata, or even Gaara who spoke. It was Tenten, who, Gaara realized, Sakura must have run to fetch once Neji burst in. "Leave them be. No one bothers us, why should we bother them?"

"Yes, but even so, she's my-"

"I don't care. You're being a jerk. Let Hinata decide who she wants to date."

"Ummmm, is this a bad time?" Kurenai stepped in, with a hawk perched on her left arm. "The Hokage has called us back, apparently there is some important information that he must relay to us.

Naruto was stunned. "Did Kakashi-sensei complete his mission with the pervy sage yet?"

Sakura was quicker on the uptake. "Wait. You said "he". Who are you talking about, Kurenai-sensei?"

Kurenai smiled. "Kakashi, of course."

Here's that chapter I spoke of. It still needs to be finished, so hopefully I'll upload part two tomorrow, and the whole of Chapter Six by Sunday.

Book Two, Chapter Five: New Elections, Aoki's Return! Part 1!

"What is this?"

Hibiki had had a bad feeling ever since they entered the Land of Lightning, but now that they had approached the village gate, he realized things were more than bad. This was just awful.

In the gate were 22 dead Chunin and Genin guards. They had been hacked to peices. From around the corner came five civilians, who picked up one body each, and carried them into the village. Then five more came. And five more. They continued to come until all of the body's had been picked up. When the last four departed, the fifth came up to the three shocked shinobi.

"You three may come along. The Raikage is waiting for you."

They followed him, speechless, to the site of the massacre in the village square. The Raikage stood in the middle, with his back to them, wearing his full Raikage robe. Aoki approached him.

"Lord Raikage, we have re...turned....."

Aoki and his friends gasped. This man wearing the Raikage robe was not the Third Raikage.

"Kakashi sensei? Where's Tsunade-sama"

They were back in the Hokage's mansion, and Kakashi was sitting behind Tsunade's old desk, wearing the Hokage robe. All members of teams Kakashi, Guy, Asuma, and Kurenai were lined up facing him. Yamato was also present.

"There has been a, ah, change in plans." Kakashi said, "Tsunade has gone with Jiraiya in my stead. She deemed it prudent to send both of the two remaining Sannin after Akatsuki, with as many Jonin as possible. She therefore deemed it prudent to elect another Hokage, and the Land of fire agreed."

"So you're the new Hokage?!" Naruto looked at Kakashi, his eyes full of admiration.

"Not yet he isn't." All of the Leaf shinobi in the room turned to see Danzo standing in the corner. "Kakashi Hatake," Danzo began, "As is my right as a councilor of the Leaf, I challenge you for the title of Hokage!"

Jiraiya was standing outside of an inn in the Land of Fire. He spotted Tsunade, leading roughly 20 Jonin and Special Jonin towards his location. He turned to them as they landed.

"You sure did take your sweet time."

"If you hadn't been so far out," Tsunade responded, "We wouldn't have had to come so far. So, where's this so called "Akatsuki base" anyway?"

"I'll take you there. It's a cave in a small ring of hills in the Hidden Grass."

"Alright then, let's go, Jiraiya!"

_________________________________

"Akira? You became the 4th Raikage? Where's the 3rd?"

Akira smiled at the three of them; it was a cold, quiet smile. "I was elected on a whim by the Land of Lightning. The 3rd, he's... well, dead. Our village was attacked by a single swordsman, and we were defeated, thought he Raikage did manage to take the swordsman with him. The funeral was yesterday. I'm sorry that you had to miss it."

He saw how this registered in their faces. Their protector, their leader, their friend was gone. He shifted his feet uncomfortably. "If you three want to go after them, I won't stop you. It's just that I can't support you. If you want, you could stay hear and recouporate......"

"No." It was Hibiki who answered, but he spoke for all of them. "We've got something we need to do."

Akira nodded, and watched the three of them leap out of sight.

Book Two, Chapter Five: New Elections, Aoki's Return! Part 2!

"Kabuto-sama, are you sure you don't want to evacuate?"

"No captain. They have surrounded our hideout; coming out that way would just mean a massacre."

"Very well." The captain still looked uneasy. And Kabuto could see why, too.

Hour's ago, the Hidden Sound village had been attacked by the Stone Village Militia. The attack had been sudden, and without warning. As such, the Sound village had suffered heavy casualties, and then retreated into the underground hideout.

Only a few squads of Sound Jonin remained; they totaled up to be about twelve men, including the captain of the forces. Of these twelve men, about five were injured, and another three were so tired they had laid down on the floor.

The Stone ninja, on the other hand, totaled to be about thirty ninja, none of whom had a scratch on them. The reason for this seemed to be that the Stone village had ferreted away the injured ninja, and somehow disposed of the bodies of the dead shinobi.

In Kabuto's mind, this meant two things, one; that the Stone village had sent at least one fourth of their ninja to assault the Hidden Sound, and two; that the Stone village's, or rather Akatsuki's plan was working.

Today, Kabuto was going to die. He had already accepted that. And as he stood there, in that small hold-out room, while the Stone ninja rocked the hideout with their Earth Style jutsu, he decided.

He decided he didn't care. Today was the end of Kabuto Yakushi. Tomorrow would be the dawn of Akatsuki's rule. So many lives would be lost, so why was his so important? Answer: it wasn't.

He turned to his men, and opened the door. he walked out into the hallway, and with a slow deliberation, turned to face the entrance.

"Let's give 'em hell, boys."

_________________________________

The leaf ninja approached the Akatsuki hideout slowly, as though the very trees under which they stood could sense their approach.

Actually, the trees played host to a very certain Akatsuki member. After viewing all of the leaf ninja, and watching them pass by, Zetsu sank into the tree, and rose out of the ground in front of the hideout.

Deidara was fighting Airi, and as Zetsu had anticipated, he was infuriated by her Ninja Art; Man Beast Scroll jutsu. He had already begun using his c2 Dragon, when he saw Zetsu approaching.

"Hey, Zetsu! What're you doing? You're in the way!"

Kisame frowned. "Something wrong?" he inquired.

Zetsu nodded. "The Leaf is here."

"What? That's crazy!" Kisame yelled, leaping up from where he sat on the grass. "Deidara, circle back up and around!"

"I know!" Deidara's dragon turned and flew right behind the largest mountain in the ring of hills, the one under which the base was built.

Zetsu turned to Airi. "You're in," he said without hesitation, "Now, you've got your first mission. The leader is in the Grass right now, but he will be moving to the Hidden Rain soon. He will introduce you to your new partner. So, you must renedevous with him in the capital. Just go to the base of the tallest tower; he's there."

Airi nodded. "And you?"

"I will be meeting with the captain of the Rock vilage attack force. Tell our leader that, too."

And without another word, Airi lept off into the forest on the other side of the mountain, and Zetsu sank into the ground. Kisame was alone on the hillside.

"Well, not quite alone." he thought as a barrage of kunai sped towards him from the trees.
