So, I'm a big reader. I have a small library at home that has served me well for many years. I mostly deal with Fantasy and Science Fiction, but I've dabbled in thriller, mystery, religous, etc. I've read a lot of different genres. My favorite book of all time is Ender's Game, by Orson Scott Card. Slightly futuristic, maybe a hundred years into the future, but it's not too noticable. The basic premise is that a sentient alien race was discovered. They are called the Formics, but are known as The Buggers because of their insectoid appearance. Anyway, they got some skills. They showed up in their little starships and kicked the crap out of a big portion of China before we fought them off. Then, they came a second time and stirred up trouble, preparing to set up a colony. It looked grim for a long time. We had our little pathetic excuses for starships. The buggers outgeared us, outnumbered us, outclassed us. Basically, the end was near. Then, out of no where, a little-known commander named Mazer Rackham pulled off a few moves and somehow saved the day. The how is still a mystery, but this is all just to set up the story. The world decided that no matter the gear, weapons, numbers, if we have an amazing commander, we can do anything. So, the IF, International Fleet, was developed, and they created what is known as the Battle School. Kids across the world are tested and monitored at a young age, and if they show promise, they're taken up to battle school to be trained as commanders and officers. Ender is one such boy, and this book is about his time in Battle School and Command School after that. It's a great read, and I would recommend it to anybody. Other books I've enjoyed are The Black Company series by Glen Cook, The Kingmaker, Kingbreaker series by Karen Miller, the Erevis Cale series by Paul S. Kemp, and the rest of the Ender's Game book, up through Children of the Mind and everything in between, as well as the parallel novel Ender's Shadow, and all subsequent books. Anyway, these are some of the books I've enjoyed. Feel free to check them out and tell me what you think.

Orson Scott Card's books certainly were good. My favorite book of all time though would probably have to be Herman Hesse's Demian, translated naturally, I can't read German. |

I cannot strongly recommend the A Song of Ice and Fire series by George R.R. Martin. It is a spectacular series with some of the best character development I've seen in a fantasy series. Add in brilliant political intrigue and gritty realism and you come out with a winner for sure. I'll give that the first book starts off a bit slow for those unused to reading such complex literature but if you stick with it, the book really takes off and you will find yourself unable to put the series down. Sadly, the series is on-going at this point but the latest book should be out soon. It's a great feast for anybody looking for a really meaty series to sink their teeth in... wow that was too many food puns.
