Another one of my favorites, Martyr of the Sands has been a thorn in the sides of aggro decks ever since the card was printed. The ability to gain at least 12 life (on average) as well as prevent damage from an attacker for just 2 mana is quite astounding. If you pair this card up with Proclamation of Rebirth or Emeria, The Sky Ruin, then even control decks will have a hard time dealing with the life gain. Martyr saw plenty of play when it was in standard in the U/W MartyrTron decks which utilized the UrzaTron to power out a quick Martyr/Proclamation combo and eventually winning with usually a Chronosavant. Recently Martyr has also seen a resurgence in extended for its performance in the B/W Martyr deck, but instead of just using the life gain as a gigantic wall against other decks, the deck also utilizes cards like Phyrexian Arena and Moonlight Bargain for cheap card draw that has little to no bearing on your life total because of the martyr. I believe as long as martyr is in extended it will see play because of its amazing ability to hold of offensive decks. Constructed: 4/5 Sealed/draft: 3/5 Casual: 4/5 This card plus Lich makes for a mighty fun game
